What is a photographic style and how do you get one?

Is it a characteristic "mistake" that one keeps making?

Is it a more conscious insistence on shooting a characteristic scene? The mark of an eye that is selectively blind?

Or is there something more metaphysical about it? A way of seeing?

How much is conscious?

How much is unconscious?

Please excuse my ramblings. Just trying to start conversation.

This is a good question.

There are a few photographers that I say have a characteristic "style"... like if you see on of their photos you know for christ sake it is theirs. I think this can be a good and can be a bad thing.

It is good when you are trying to sell yourself, your work as your work. When you are trying to become an all around photography machine that can do anything that is on your plate and not have a characteristic look-feel... then this can be an issue.

I think it is basically about being consistent.

And why not have multiple styles.

I personally keep changing.
