Shooting in Cave Hill Cemetery, It will cost ya!

So the other day I was on the Cave Hill website. I noticed that they had a rules are and decided to give it a look. It stated that if you were going to use the cemetery for any photography project, you were to contact the office for a photo pass.
I was curious about this, so I fired off an email asking for more details. I explained that I was wanting to shoot some portraits of a friend on the grounds. Nothing risque, just a few portraits. I also brought up the fact that people with big slr type camera have been run out of Cave Hill and wanted to know what the exact rules were for photographing here. Turns out they charge $100 per half day for this pass!

Kinda kooky!

Holy cow! I did not even know that.....wonder what happens if you "get caught" and haven't paid?

I will be "Playing Dumb" if I ever shoot there.

I've photographed there in two different ways...

1) I just went in and took pictures. No problems. It was a weekend.

2) I went to the office and got a non-commercial pass. It was the middle of the week. This seemed the better option. It didn't cost anything since I was not intending to use the images for monetary gain.

I had a similar experience at Whitehall House and Gardens a few weeks ago. I went to shoot an engagement sitting and the 'new grounds keeper' came out and introduced himself and asked if I had scheduled the sitting? I said, no, but I contribute a significant amount ($500.00) to the historical society (they own and maintain Whitehall) each year and in return for my donation, I had always been allowed to come and go freely. He handed me a pink slip of paper and said that they had changed the rules.......

I had to read the slip of paper 3 times to make sure I was reading it right! Because it now costs you $250.00 PER SESSION - to take a client there. Ummm... at those prices, I will be finding another place to shoot. And I will no longer contribute to the historical society.

Ryan, I have found that it's best to ask forgiveness rather than ask permission.

Once I went there, and this was in the 90s so bear with me. With a young student photographer friend. She was taking photos of me in that very cliché gothy type way. I had my shirt off with leather pants and trying to be all kind of sexy and low and behold a guy in a little golf cart came up and told us to take a hike. There was talk of a fine, and talk of trespassing, but they just let us leave.

Cave Hill is not the only cemetery that does this.

I was shooting once at the creamatorium next door to Cave Hill and that little cemetery, and there was a film crew with midgets. They said they had a permit from the city, and would say we were with them if any one asked. If cops would have came - you could get fined or jailed for trespassing, I assume.

THE WORST is Waverly Hills. $5000 fine for trespassing!! I was escorted off the grounds, but not fined because the guy liked the chicky I was with (heh).

My thoughts are this: Make arrangements or chance it and TRY to play dumb. But really... it could get, ick.

Midgets at the cemetery?
What kind of movie was this?

$5000 is light for Waverly- They have been shooting at people...
I don't blame them after seeing what the stupid kids have done to the place...

Some period film, I guess. They were in cloaks.

I wanted to get some shots with them, but they seemed busy. Jamie (Anne) was there... ask her about it! It's the shoot where we got the anarchy photo you may have seen.

HOLY CRAP! this just totally blows my mind..I guess its a good thing I enjoy the small more intimate cemeteries for photo ops than the big more popular ones. I think its wrong for them to charge..just my opinion. But HOLY cow that still just shocks the hell outta me..LOL
