Working on this whole "Commercial" thing..

So I've come to realise that parents have money and money wants commercial - Here in louisville anyway!
After talking with a good friend, I've realised... I need to get on this. I need to learn this as well as everything else. Above that, I want to learn commercial as I want to learn - all of it.

So.

This is Emily. Emily actually met with me awhile back about doing something a little more fun, but I havent found much use for her look. I approached her about doing a senior portrait in the park type setup and she gladly agreed.

It was very awkward, because theres not much to this. Smile.. look over there.. lay in the grass..laugh.. alright we're done I guess. I managed to score a job from these, so it wasnt a total bust.

How senior photo is this?!?! I dont really like these shots at all, but I wanted to see if I could pull it off.

Next was Jen and whitney. Jen needed senior photos and decided to bring friend whitney along with her.
his is Jen:

This is also an original. No edits. Oh so hard to post. Now this is me and all, so I turned it into this:

Which I dig much much better! If it was me, I would choose the edited version, but Jen - chose the original. I'm also realising, people like originals, which blows me away, but alright. I'll just make different versions. I just cant settle with leaving them all untouched - half the fun is playing with photos later on!

Anyway, Heres another of Jen-

Yes I know.. Very.. done and done.

Heres her friend whitney. Whitney was a hoot. Crazy and bouncy. She was jumping and giggling and just all over the place! So I told her to go stand on the bench, which isnt typical I realise..

When I look at most of the photos of whitney, all I can see is and think about is HAAAIIIRRRRRR! Hair, Hair, and more HAIR! I need to pay more attention to hair!

The most recent of this type was a mother and her daughter. A friend (Kara Rucker) was shooting them and asked If I wanted to come along and be a second shooter. The girl new of my work, and happily aggreed!

This was interesting because I realised I seriously needed to clean my camera. Ive actually been thinking about it a lot lately and considered getting some of that bandaid stuff. I was talking with Ron in chuck rubins a little while back and he convinced me it was all in my head. Im starting to rethink it. I also had a lot of trouble getting clarity with these, which really pisses me off when I look at them. I can't figure out what im doing wrong in this area - I havent noticed this before.

I welcome any tips.

Snow is coming now, and I dont work from a studio. So I dont know how the hell Im going to get business in this department during the winter months. I doubt momma bringing their cute little kids out in the freezing cold to get photos done by a chic who doesnt even have a studio! Ahhh - Fun.

I guess the main thing im trying to do is get really fantastic at all of it. Obviously, I do not want to go into this type of work. Its not any fun.. Theres not much to do.. and I can't mess with the photos! So I dont know how "fantastic" I can get at something I don't cherish.

Alright thats it - just an update.

just because you want to make money doing commercial work doesn't mean you can't have your artist work seperately and be successful at BOTH, nor should it take away from your artistic credibility in any facet. people who make judgements on that...well shouldn't judge. you are such a talented artist, i see very little that is even similar to what you do-you'll never lose it. and there will come a time when the opportunity is right & you'll be able to transcend the art into actual work. especially because what you do is YOURS, i see others who are knocking off famous photogs very clearly, but your work resembles no one elses. good for you for thinking outside of the box to try something different, even though it is mainstream-that is out of your comfort zone-and really, aren't we all better for getting outside of our little boxes?. i agree with scott-in essence, get in where you fit in. and what fufills YOU ;-) and hey, if it doesn't fufill you, at least you TRIED.

Jacob: no
Scott: your right - What im really concerned about is the soft focus. I cant seem to figure out how to fix it to where I can get both faces in focus.. I know its a camera thing.. I just need to get in there and practice more with it.
As far as light.. I believe thats a personal opinion. We all differ in that.

Robby: 28 years is way to much time for me to invest in something. My brain moves around and simply will not let me devote that much time. This commercial thing.. I do not like it.. Not what you see above anyway. Its just about the money for me. As soon as I can figure out how to do what I love.. and still make money.. Much like what bill said.

Ditto what Jacob said... each of us are going to have a different approach and greatly different opinions. Take what works for you in regard to making a living and godspeed Joey.

There is no money in Louisville, no real money anyway.

Travel to where you can do what you do and get noticed by art directors.

This will kill you.
