I shoot primarily film, but I use digital where it's appropriate. I shoot with large format (4x5), some medium format- mostly ancient folding cameras these days- and 35mm cameras.
MY DIGITAL DARKROOM:
Mac- what else?
ABOUT ME:
I've been photographing the world around me since I was twelve years old. Whatever else I've done, there has always been a camera nearby. In college I studied art, art history, and literature, which was wonderful, but left me with little practical career direction. After a brief stint as an assistant to a commercial and wedding photographer in my hometown of New Haven, CT, I was hooked on pursuing a career in photography, but knew I needed to learn the business and get a better foundation in my craft, so I attended the Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls, MA (a ten-month intensive "professional photography" program). Connections there lead to an internship with Annie Leibovitz in New York City. I started at the Leibovitz Studio doing archive work, research, and answering phones, and occasionally I got to go on shoots, where my job was to help the assistants set up gear and otherwise stay out of the way. After three or four years doing production and assisting work at the Leibovitz Studio, I left and moved to other freelance work with many photographers. I worked in several carefully controlled commercial still-life studios; was second shooter for a high-end wedding photographer; I spent a year in the dark at a high-end custom black and white lab; I managed and assisted a scatter-brained travel photographer.
After eight years in New York City, I had done just about every sort of work there is connected to the business of photography, and I was getting sick of the NYC grind, cost, and pace. My girlfriend, a Louisville native, was ready to move back home, so we packed up our cats and moved here two years ago.
I still shoot, but these days much of my work is supporting other photographers in a variety of ways. I run a small custom black and white lab, carefully hand-processing film and doing exhibition and work printing for a variety of artists. I have also been working as an editor and general sounding board, helping photographers and artists produce books and exhibitions and execute long-term exploratory and documentary projects.
Currently, I'm trying to sort out the logistics of opening a public photography space which could serve in a variety of capacities, including a gallery and exhibition space, a rental studio, commercial and rental darkroom, teaching space, meeting space, lecture hall, and general photo community hub. If this interests you, let's talk.
Hi there-just got back from Mex. it was really awesome. I did hear from your friend towards the end of my trip. I'm going to have to return to the area to see more. I loved it.
what is new with you?
Hey Drew, nice to see you the other day. I am intrigued by the Angel character and the Mexican connection. I enjoyed reading your little bio. I guess I should write one with more info, too. I think we should throw a big photographers' bash, what do you think? Maybe a photo-exchange grab-bag, a show and tell, a potluck, or all of the above. Would love to get together sometime soon and look at photos. How's your schedule?
