Also, he was lit using a Vivitar SF-3000 (cheap little generic external flash) to the right of the bowl along with a backlight of a 22" widescreen computer monitor that sits behind his bowl.

Thanks guys. This is my Betta fish, Poe, who was my willing test subject for indoor use of Kenko extension tubes mounted on a Nikon 18 - 200mm VR. The "ice" look is actually his dirty bowl, sadly enough, but it made for a good effect! :)
