If you have anywhere near $600 to spend, I would highly reccomend that lens. It's a great lens. You will not be disappointed.
I kinda' think like you. I use zoom
lenses so I don't have to walk all over the place. Zooming is a great feature to have in the 'composition' department too. I'm pretty much selling my fixed lenses and sticking with Canon L zooms, other that the 300mm f/2.8. That's a "must get this lens before I die" kind of lens.

Even with the 10-22mm zoom (ha! not really much zoom), I still like getting close to my subjects and going for odd angles. Which sometimes results in the oh so fun shadow but that's my own fault.
With the wide angle you can stand very close to subjects and get the full object in the frame and obviously the same goes for moving back. I'd think one of the Sigma 17-70s or Canon 17-40s might be more what you want. The Canon 16-35 with the lower f stop is quite a bit more expensive.
