Folks, I'd really like to pick up a wide angle lens.  Something in the 10mm to 17mm, 11mm to 14mm, range, but I don't want to break the bank either.  I don't want to spend more than $300.  I know that probably makes it impossible.  A prime lens would work as well.

Any ideas.

I shoot with a Canon 40D.

Don, somewhere in this long discussion is a link to a gallery of lots of pics I shot with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8

If you have anywhere near $600 to spend, I would highly reccomend that lens. It's a great lens. You will not be disappointed.

I kinda' think like you. I use zoom
lenses so I don't have to walk all over the place. Zooming is a great feature to have in the 'composition' department too. I'm pretty much selling my fixed lenses and sticking with Canon L zooms, other that the 300mm f/2.8. That's a "must get this lens before I die" kind of lens.

the great thing about the fixed wide angle is that you can walk. :0) just teasing but truthfully if you're willing to move around you'll get the shots you want.

Even with the 10-22mm zoom (ha! not really much zoom), I still like getting close to my subjects and going for odd angles. Which sometimes results in the oh so fun shadow but that's my own fault.

With the wide angle you can stand very close to subjects and get the full object in the frame and obviously the same goes for moving back. I'd think one of the Sigma 17-70s or Canon 17-40s might be more what you want. The Canon 16-35 with the lower f stop is quite a bit more expensive.
11-16 tokina is 600 and a 2.8.
I havent read through the whole thread but youve got Canon, Sigma, Tamron, or Tokina that make UWA lenses. I think Tamron would be the cheapest but I dont know. Id honestly just recommend saving your pennies and getting the good stuff the first time round.
i have a tokina 11-16 now. this lens is SHARP! it's made for 1.6x crop cameras, but i use it on my 1.3 croppers and can use it at 12-16 w/ no problems.

I am burning this thing up at weddings. easily worth $600...good luck finding one in stock.
I reeeeally miss mine. It's easily Canon 'L' Quality in my opinion.....and yeah....they move pretty quickly even on the used market.
the tokina is in such high demand there is one on amazon for $1600! LOL.
I Googled the lens last night and found a few sites that had it in stock for 600-$650 range ...

I really like the Tokina. At 2.8 you just cant beat that price. Im taking it with me to San Francisco tomorrow.
Honestly Id just save up a couple extra months or whatever and get something you know youll be happy with.
I took these photos with a Tamron 10-24 on a Rebel XT. The lens sells for just under $500 but you could probably get one used at ebay in your price range.
