This year, of course, marks the inaugural Louisville Visual Arts Festival - with a focus on local notable photographer CJ Pressma's Center for Photographic Studies and beyond, the entire art of photography. The LVAF is not only a retrospective, it is a festival for a living art with contemporaries as well as Masters of the craft. Tim Furnish, Rachel Seed, and Mary Yates (of this very community) along side Ansel Adams, Eugene Meatyard, and Minor White - lectures that mention Flickr in the history of street photography with the likes of Robert Frank and Diane Arbus. If you haven't been out to an event, there are a few weeks left and you need to be there.
The event has been a success in a number of ideological ways - which is phenominal, not only because of the scope of the project, but an ongoing sustainable festival with an annual focus on the fine arts city wide - but also, because the festival itself has had no "arts stimulus" money or public funding whatsoever. It has been, simply, community involvement and need that has perpetuated the 36 galleries and museums to participate and support the idea of the festival.
Now the plea.
Part of the project all along has been, as I have said, to create a "sustainable" fine arts festival that will raise the bar of Louisville's fine arts community. The public knows that we have a few more events as well as gallery/museum shows for the remainder of the 5 weeks, and this needs to be managed. To make sure that everything is captured this of course means that there has to be a budget - even a small one.
Simply put, it won't happen by itself - here is the short list of what is needed to fill out the festival for the future.
Needs include:
Development of PR and real-world production of final Mellwood Arts Collective show.
Further mailers/email/social networking/and press work for the end of June and the month of July.
Further local and national press.
Packaging the festival for future festivals - including all capture and revenue for grants and sponsorship onward.
Following up with sponsors and participating galleries.
Development of PR and real-world production of final Mellwood Arts Collective show.
With the final Mellwood Arts Collective Show of LVAF 2009 on the horizon, there needs to be real world production costs covered for this show - 36 galleries and museums showcasing two-three pieces of work from the largest fine arts event ever produced in Kentuckiana - The Mellwood Arts and Entertianment Center housing it on the final FAT Friday Trolley Hop of the festival months, July 31st. I have also asked Ryan to help curate a LPC projection of YOUR photographs during the Mellwood event and that info will be coming soon. This includes our showcasing not only the art, but sponsor businesses that came on board in part because of the event's ideals. This is where the festival should shine. Needs will include entertainment, food/beverage, following up and collecting with participating galleries and sponsors, and staffing.
I have supplied in kind printing to a fault for the festival, in these harsh economic times - I can likely get further in kind or discounted printing for the month of July, if given the opportunity, however a small budgetary inclusion for printing would offset any further needs. Social Networking has done some good, but to this date a mailer for the entire festival has not gone out - something that should happen for the final event at Mellwood.
I have a writer for Art News and Arts In America that is interested in coming to Louisville for the remainder of the festival and do something for national press. Also, I am in discussion with Aperture, and other national photographic magazines and periodicals. This will need work on in-kind and paid sponsors for members of the press - including housing, meals and handlers (drivers, etc).
Packaging the festival for the future includes collecting assets - including any video/audio, press, collecting all public relations, assessment of ROI and what ever else has been secured and finally - pinpointing the resources for future funding. I can provide this service, and since I have secured NEA sponsorship for festivals and education will be able to lead this initiative.
And finally, a structured followup with participating galleries, organizations, and assessment of what the participants need and want out of a future festival(s), and simple outline of wins and losses.
A real world budget that includes all of this would likely need to be thousands of dollars. We can accomplish this with a smaller budget and in/kind sponsorship.
This is a plea to the Louisville Photographic Collective to help make this happen, small donations of $10-25 or larger donations of $100-$5000 are tax deductable and easily made via Pay Pal on the LVAF DONAR link at the Louisville Visual Arts Organization Website
http://www.louisvillevisualart.org/LVAF.html - or, you can contact me directly for other types of donations (monetary and in-kind) and I will personally visit you to thank you in person! Just email me at bil.brown@gmail.com
I think this is a fair to be responsible to the idea that has become a great event for Kentucky and the surrounding municipalities!! Let's get this done, for now and the future!
