Ok I have been an amateur photographer for some time and I would love to be able to get some one on one or a small group lesson on some things I don't understand.  I basically just take my camera and start playing with it but not really understand on how to do some of the settings.  Does anyone know of anyone that does any sort of teaching besides Murphy's camera?  Everytime I go to sign up for one of their sessions it is always full or at a time that I can't make.

Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.  I have read tons of books but honestly I am a hands on type learner so reading them isn't doing me much good.

Have you tried viewing tutorial videos on Youtube? There are some pretty decent ones on there & of course it's free : )

Trina,

I had pretty good experience with UofL Delphi Center.  They have Photography Basics and an Advanced Digital Photography.  Bsics was too basic for me, but Advanced course was very helpful.

I would suggest to check them out.

There is a SMUG meetup in Louisville, you can learn a lot by attending that and asking questions.
One other thing, the best way to learn is really just by taking your camera out and shooting while you play with the different controls.  When you make your own mistakes you learn more.  Of course that can also get frustrating, but stick with it.

I would say that classes or any other type of work with an instructor "jump starts" understanding of the whole process and gets you to the point of where you can learn by yourself by playing with settings.

As I mentioned, I attended advanced photo course at UofL - it really helped.

Ok what is a SMUG meetup and where is it and when?

Yeah I looked at the courses and also at lifetime learning on jcps site and they sound pretty interesting.  Now I will have to figure out how to pay for them....lol.  I do have some pictures that I feel are really great but of course not a clue on how I managed to take them or anything else.  I guess I will have to try and figure that out.  I know there is away to get the properties info on them I just have to find them...lol.

As for learning on my own that isn't a problem it is extremely frustrating though when I see the shot and I think it is going to come out the way I want only to realize the setting was all wrong and by the time I figure out the right settings it isn't there to shoot anymore.
