I'm thinking about taking the advanced digital slr class at Murphy's Camera on May 16, but I don't know if it will be worth the $50. Here is the description:

Start to take more control of your Digital SLR. This in-depth 4-hour course with a 1-hour break for lunch will show you how to master your camera’s light meter, use apertures and shutter speeds to your advantage, select the right lens for your needs, and start to explore shooting with flash. File formats, ISO, and filters will also be discussed.

Has anyone taken this class and actually learned valuable info from it? I just don't want to get out of the class and feel like I could have learned just as much from the internet and used the $50 for something tangible!

Opinions? Advice?

Well, if you aren't sure you would benefit, then you probably would. But there is no doubt you could learn it all from the internet, one way or another. Yet, there is a warm creamy feeling from attending seminars and workshops, even if you learn very little. And sometimes you learn things that they weren't trying to teach. It's motivational if nothing else. And you will meet other photographers, so it could be a little networking too.

It seems kind of basic even though they call it 'advanced'. It's here. I especially like how "file formats" and "ISO" are mentioned at the end like they are something tossed in there for fun. ISO is very camera dependent as far as how high you can go without creating 'the suck'. And File Formats are a big deal. You could do a week of classes on the advantages of shooting raw and how to edit and store the files.

You might learn more in the flash photography class. And, of course, you might learn nothing there. But anything you can learn about light and lighting is always good. And anything that gets you thinking about light can't be bad.

I want a "How to Create Dead Sexy Images That Will Arouse Zombies & Old People Without Being Sleezy" Class. I would pay up to $12. And there doesn't have to be a lunch break.

If I were 20, I might spend the $50 on a hooker and just look up DSLR on wikipedia.
Matt-

I noticed you are interested in the class but not so interested in the price, and I can understand that. After referring this fact to Mr. Murphy, we decided to offer a discount... please give the Murphy's Shelbyville Rd location a call (893-5089, ask for Amy Murphy or Bill Byrd so we can verify LPC membership) and ask about the special pricing available ONLY TO LPC MEMBERS for the Advanced SLR class on May 16th, 2009. Thanks!

And in response to your wondering if you will benefit from the class, I really don't think anyone can answer that for you. It depends on how much you already know about the topics listed, but I know when I attended the advanced class I found it very helpful. Even hearing things I had learned before only made them sink in better, and I left feeling very inspired to shoot. Hope this helps!

Amy
PS- Advanced in this case = class discussions are based on shooting in full manual mode, and go in depth on this and related topics. It is not as challenging to follow as its title might imply.
Murphy's Camera... Amy Murphy... Hmm, is there a connection there?
My brain hurts.

The only Murphy I know is Charlie Murphy. The one who knew Rick James...
haha, yes Jacob the connection is there
