OPENING RECEPTION Friday October 23, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.with a free concert by JOE HENRY

on view October 23, 2009 - January 3, 2010

For this photography exhibit, Cincinnati based photographer Michael Wilson has hunted through all his old and recent black and white contact sheets to make new photographs that have never been seen before.

Michael Wilson became a well-known commercial photographer by photographing musicians. Over the last 20+ years he’s photographed many musicians including laura veirs, over the rhine, doc watson, and wilco, etc.etc. (michaelwilsonphotographer.com has an a-z index).

He’s published four books: Heads Bowed Eyes Closed, No One Looking Around, I See That Hand, What I Really Like Is Music, and First Kind Sight.

He’s had solo exhibitions in many places including the Cincinnati Art Museum, Vanderbilt University, and a recent mid-career retrospective called “The Day of Small Things” organized by the The Light Factory in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was also part of the first exhibit at the 930 when we opened in early 2008, The View from the Street.

Bill,

I've heard you talk tons of this guy! I hope that the show has a great turnout.
just a reminder, this friday night...
last night was the opening of michael's "whatever happened to martha?" photography exhibit at the 930 art center here in louisville. the exhibit is a series of new work and previously unseen images from michael's catalog of work.

i thought the name of the show was intriguing, so i asked michael and he explained that many years ago, he started working on a book of images that was to be called "martha, martha" and that for some reason, the project had several false starts and stalls and never seemed to get completed. the concept was eventually abandonded by him, but the images themselves stuck around. sixteen of the first images included in the show are from the "martha, martha" project.

the work was, as always, beautiful and it is beautifully presented by michael and the gallery. if you're near or passing through the germantown area sometime between now and january 3rd, it's worth a detour...

michael also brought along a friend of his to help celebrate the opening, joe henry, who delivered a stunning acoustic set of music.

it was a beautiful evening, for the eyes and the ears.

here is a little about the work, from michael himself (he's pretty good with words too, it's chocked full of quotables):

i love the quote:
"i am a photographer
i stand in front of things and hope"

~michael wilson

enough said.
Michael Wilson's work is inspiring. I had the privilege to set in on a photography seminar he had at the 930 a couple of years ago. Great guy and great work.
he is a great guy. and a great artist.

i love the line...

"i am a photographer. i stand in front of things and hope."

the show will be up until the end of the year.
