I have two shoe-mount strobes I would sell, but they're Canon brand, so you would have to switch to a Canon body to take full advantage. :)
But to be honest, whatever brand and model of flash unit you get, make sure you can manually adjust the flash power. You can use any brand of flash and use something like Cybercyncs to trigger it. If you're wanting to do the kind of shooting like Jacob, then a Nikon is your best bet. Watch the used market for a SB-800, is what I would suggest. Much less than $900.
You can do a whole lot also with simple reflectors as well.
Laptops? This is your big chance to make a great career choice and ditch PC's for ever. For just a little more money than you mentioned, you can get a 13" Mac laptop that will last much longer than it's PC counterpart.....with no downtime due to viruses, .dll file screw-ups or any of the other Winblows maladies that constantly trouble that platform.

Macs also have great resale value.
