Has anyone had any experience with shooting at the Kentucky Derby? Either personal or professional? I need some advice.

I am going to be covering the KY Derby for the Nat'l Guard. I'll have an all-access press pass. I'm not sure what I should cover and in what order. Never been to the Derby before, let alone cover it as a photographer.

A little help, please?

Ryan can tell you how to get shot by snipers with real guns on the roof of Churchill Downs.
HAHA, yes I can. I have the pics to prove it!
There will only be 4,000 other photographers there. The larger the glass you bring, the cooler you'll be.

When you say you are covering the KY Derby for the National Guard (or is it the Nat'l Guard from France?), what do you mean? Are you just covering the event in general? Or is there some kind of National Guard function there and you are covering that and the Derby? Because being sent there to cover the event for the National Guard seems odd to me. Mostly because i want to know if it involves my tax dollars at work. I don't pay my taxes, but I hear that they are supposed to be really high.
I'll be glad to help,,email me and I'll give you may address so you can send me the credentials and I'll be glad to take care of this burden for you. =) You lucky dog,,,,have fun, enjoy,,
I love shootin' me some horses!

Apart from the additional security assistance that the National guard provides at the derby, there are no other NG activities that I'm aware of. While I am a photojournalist for "Bluegrass Guard" magazine, I don't think we're planning a story on the Derby. It's more of a professional development opportunity.

I could use some advice in this area as well. I've been contacted by Churchill's marketing department to cover the Chief Party Officer. Basically I'll be following him around at Dawn at the Downs, Oaks, Derby Ever parties, and Derby Day itself. I haven't taken on an assignment this big before so I'm really not sure what to charge. Any advice would be quite welcomed. (fotoewizzard@gmail.com)
From what I know all-access pass might still be limited. You need to make sure of that. Because if you want to be trackside you need to have a special pass and wear a vest.
Yes. Just because you are credentialled through Churchill, doesn't mean you get to go everywhere. There are little stickers attached to your media credential that allow you to go different places. You also have to get assigned a spot on the rail if that is what you are doing. This happens at an early morning meeting the day before. You also have to be given a track sticker for your badge and go to this meeting to get a vest.

Kevin, you are just following a drunk around. What pointers do you need for this?

Ryan, I'm not asking for pointers about the shooting. I'm asking about pricing. I've never negotiated for a project this big before.
