Okay so I've read a little here and there about HDR images and i got the jist of how everything works and a little of how to do them but can anyone tell me.... or point me in the right direction of getting a good HDR image?
You want to look for scenes or shots that have a high contrast range. In other words, scenes that have really bright areas and really dark areas. Those in my opinion give you some of the best HDR styled shots. Also, I find that its best to use a tripod and bracket at least 5 if not 7 shots to get optimal coverage. A wireless cable release will help too because you want to avoid camera shake as much as possible because since you are making a composite of multiple images, you want them to line up correctly.
I just did this one yesterday... (this one is a composite of 5 images, with an exposure increment of +/- 1, hand held). I always use Aperture mode too and let the camera determine the shutter speeds.
I would go to youtube.com type in you camera model and how to do HDR. I did that and got a great 8 minute video on how to set the camera up. (d300)
They also have some good tutorials on how to use photomatix to process the HDR image. I actually plan on attempting my first HDR this Saturday/Sunday sometime , so Im in the same boat as you. I think Im going to try the Crescent Hill Reservoir and try to get a shot there. If Im not mistaken I think Ryan took a very nice HDR shot there. Im sure there are many people more advanced in it that can help you more here , but thats where Im starting out.
you can also practice with old photos. Just find some landscape photos and play with them. use the original and make it brighter and again but darker and save them so you have the three images.
this is one i did like that. Doesnt look as good as a real HDR would look, but its not bad.
