So how do you approach galleries for representation or exhibits? Do you call, email? Do you make an appointment, or just show up? Do you send them a slideshow of your portfolio with a cover letter? What are you supposed to say? Not say?

I haven't the faintest idea.

I don't know either, but I would start by making a friend named "Godfrey" and then I would go gallery hopping on Friday or Saturday nights. While "admiring" art just casually say something like, "Godfrey! Look at this rubbish! That Happy Meal box I finger-painted that's hanging over my toilet is much more satisfying to the artistic palette than this Wal-Martian drivel! Fetch my Rio! I'm ready to leave!" Then make a scene as you exit. I'm sure you'll get some calls.
you have an amzing imagination
You trying to say that won't work?
Y'know Shane, I often suspect that a lot of things in this world work in just that manner. :D

However, I have a feeling that the info I'm looking for is more practical and useful.
Many thanks to Charles for the message he sent me.

Feel free to throw in any other suggestions you guys may have.
Maybe just plan on going to any local exhibits you hear about. Be prepared to mingle and see what you can learn about it.
Yeah, I'll definitely be doing that, Charles.
