Not being a Louisville native, I'm not very familiar with the city. Even after living here for nearly 10 years, I still don't have a good notion for where to shoot.
What are your favorite locations for shooting? What are the pros/cons of these locations?
I have to say one of my favorite places is Mellwood Arts Center. There are tons of awesome places for portraits.
Pros: Ryan's there
Cons: Ryan's there (he'll show you up) =)
Another place worth checking out is Cave Hill Cemetery. I have shot thousands of infrareds there. Although, be careful shooting there as, depending on who you run into, they may ask you to pay. Its never happened to me, but I've heard other photographers have ran into some issues. I think it boils down to, are you just shooting for fun with minimal gear, or are you doing portraits/commercial work with three assistants and a van full of gear ...if its the latter, they WILL want you to pay.
In response to the original question, I guess locations depend on what you like to shoot. If you just want to "shoot interesting places", I suppose that is relative. But if you want cool places to photograph people for portraits, that's different. Or cool places to photograph people doing what they do. Or cool places to photograph people in their shower. I find that showers steam up my lens even if I am outside the window.
Jenn and I were shooting there late last summer and an "official" looking person approached us and told us we had to leave ...because it was closing time. The guy went on further to say (after I asked) that it was ok for use to be taking photos for personal use. He then asked us both if we got "anything good". So like I said, I think it depends on what type of photography you are doing there.
Cave Hill doesn't care if you are walking around with Pro Gear snapping pics. They DO care if you are having a portrait session though. They actually sell a photo pass at the main office for this.
Leaf Collecting and/or Commercial Photography is permitted with written permission from the main office.
It doesn't say that you have to pay. It doesn't say that you don't, either.
also Open every day of the year 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (weather permitting)
Their website likes to point out that it isn't a public park and that it is a cemetery. They have a charitable foundation to help maintain the property, but they also still sell lots.
A couple of other places you might want to consider...
Waterfront Park
Highlands area of Bardstown Road
St. James Court ---awesome architecture
21C Museum Hotel
Falls of the Ohio (just across the river in Indiana)
Locust Grove
Farmington Carriage House
there are also many cool areas of downtown to shoot, just park your car and go for a stroll, its not too hard to find something of interest
