A Plea for used digital cameras for inner city photography project

Do you have a digital camera that you would like to donate for an ArtsReach project? Do you want to invest in a newer model and would like to pass on the camera you already have? Is your digital camera just sitting in a drawer and you would feel much better if it was in the hands of an emerging youth photographer?

We are looking for 10-15 used digital cameras for photography workshops for youth from the California neighborhood. Photographer Abdul Sharif will work on an on-going basis with middle and high school students to create photographic works about the neighborhood. The group will research historic images from the photographic archives; document historic buildings and abandoned buildings; life in the neighborhood, as well as changes currently underway to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood. This project is a partnership between the young people of California neighborhood, ArtsReach, the California Collaborative, artist Abdul Sharif, the Community Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation and UPS.

The less we spend on photo equipment, the more INSTRUCTION and HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS the youth will receive.

If you have a camera (or a tripod) you would like to donate, please let me know!

Many thanks,

Great Idea ! In the summer of 1998 I did an Arts In The Parks residency project at a school on Louisville's West Side. I worked with kids 11-13 and included assignments that stressed literacy through combining their photos and writing. The students produced a book at the end of the project. I am working on setting up a similar pilot project at a community center in NOLA using still and video.

Also, I was thinking that Canon may be a good source for used digital cameras through their Canon Loyalty Program. If not directly then if such a thing is possible at Canon someone from that program may be able to point you in the right direction.

When I am in town I'd be happy to help you out if you'd like. Best Wishes for your success !

Wow Abdul, what a cool project! I wish I had something to donate. Have you inquired with Murphy's or Chuck Rubin to see if they might get involved some way?

I used to be a high school teacher and one of my classes was photography. If you need any help with this project, I'd love to volunteer my time!

Oh, I just re-read the post. I do have a tripod that I hardly ever use--would you consider a loan? I'd be happy to let you all use it as long as needed, but I'm not sure I want to give it up for good.

Thanks for the reply KL. any help with this project would be appreciated, and the tripod would help out a lot too.

I believe Julia may have contacted Chuck Rubins, but i'm not sure what type of feedback she got back yet.

If you could contact Julia and arrange a way to lend her your item, that would be awesome!

Thanks

Abdul

Hey Abdul - how good of a camera does it need to be? I have an old sony cybershot 1.2MP sitting in a drawer somewhere I can donate if I find the power cord, but I didn't know if this would be good enough for the project since its such an old camera.

Thanks so much for replying Erin. Trust me, your donation would be greatly appreciated. Any camera, big or small, new or old would work. The kids involved in this project are just starting out in photography so your camera would be a nice fit.

thanks

Abdul
