I'm in the market for a new Canon digital SLR and a few lenses. I need some advice as to what setup I should choose. After shopping around, I think I might have found the one that's right for me.. The new Canon 50D. It's a 15.1 mp camera, more than enough for my applications. Has anyone heard anything about how the image sensor reacts to the higher ISO speeds? If it's one thing that I hate the most about digital photography, it's noisy pictures.. I'm trying to do my best to avoid any issue with that, so I'm also looking at a few different lenses.

Recently I've gotten myself into a lot of low-light indoor event coverage. I don't want, nor need a ton of lenses to lug around, so I'm trying to find the most versatile available. I'm looking at, and I'd love to hear some feedback on this, a 28-300 mm f/3.5-5.6.. I'm hoping that this will give me the zoom that I want in an outdoor lens, and the range in focal distance to be used in portraits, events, and in some cases, low light situations (hopefully the ISO on the new Canon will compensate for the borderline aperture range).. Ideally, I would like to have this as my main lens, and have another, less expensive lens for my backup.. although, it looks like I'm not going to be able to find one to fit the budget.

The second lens that I was considering is the Canon 24-70 mm f/2.8.. this is most likely what I'd be using most often for indoor event coverage, although I'd like to see if I could get away with just using the 28-300 first.. no sense in sinking 1,200 in a lens that I don't necessarily need. Although, it would be nice to kiss that damn speedlight goodbye..

There was one more that I was looking at, just because I don't have a fixed lens already.. What do you guys think about the Canon 50mm 1.8? I know, I know, the 1.4 and the 1.2 are wayyy cooler.. I'm just not going to pay for something that I doubt I'll use that often; plus, isn't f/1.8 more than enough for those low-light shots that I'll be doing?

Ahhhh.. I think that's it. If there's any lens that I might have looked over and you recommend for my applications, please help me out! :)

Thanks!

i cant speak for the 50d, but i have the 40d, and love it, i dont think the noise is too bad at 3600iso

as for the 28-300 being used low light/indoor, im not sure how much success youd have with that because of its length, eventhough you can back off to 28mm (which converts to approx 45mm on the 50d) youre still sending light through a 300mm barrel, maybe someone that owns this lens could give more details, but those are my inital thoughts.
youd likely have better luck with the 24-70 for indoors, especially with the faster aperture.

and, the 50mm 1.8, i have it, and i got it just because its fast, cheap and easy (i just wanted to say easy) not thinking id use it for much more than entertainment or something, turns out it gets more use than the 17-85mm is (not to say that the is is not amazing) so, i totally recommend that lens to anyone that can let go of a buck. as for the even FASTER ones, i cant imagine paying that much more for seemingly not that much more of a difference. just mho.

and, for the last bit, well go back to my 17-85, its an is, which are great for low light apps. i can hand hold it EASY at 1/20th of a sec. im totally addicted to the is line, and thats my only experience with it. haha.

hope you find what you need.

Thanks for the info.. is this your 17-85 that you're talking about?? http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-17-85mm-f-4-5...

I looked at that one, and I love the super-wide angle that it gives, but I'm not completely sold on that f/4.. even with the IS.. I shoot a lot of moving (dancing) targets, so it kinda makes me nervous about using it at parties and stuff. I know Canon's made several improvements with the 50D, including a new image sensor.. there aren't any reviews out yet though.. so I'd hate to sink that much into a camera and hope that it will compensate for a lens that might not be what I'm looking for.. grrrr. this is frustrating.. I think I'll just sell my car and buy ALL of the canon lenses. lol.

and the 50mm, ya, I'm totally getting that one. It's sooo affordable, and I've heard great things about the image quality. I should've had that one a long time ago.

I'm kinda set on getting that 28-300mm.. it looks AMAZING.. and with a f/3.5 annnnd IS, it might be worth the hefty price tag.. I dunno.. I should just go to Murphy's and see what they think. *sigh*

Alright, thanks so much, you've been a lot of help.. I'm totally getting that 50mm f/1.8.. you've talked me into it.

I read on the internet that Murphy's got the 50D on Friday. You might want to go over and check it out.

hmmm.. I called them yesterday about it.. they told me mid to late October! I'm totally going in there.
yeah, thats the one. (the lens)
