I was browsing the net yesterday and found that Office Depot had a Maxtor 5oo gig external advertised for $99.99. I went to the store and they had some so I got mine and then thought I should pass this along. That's a pretty decent price for that size external hd if you are in the market. The sale does end on Saturday May 24.

Well crap!

I just ordered mine from Comp USA for $120. Well, I guess it was $120 with tax and shipping, but at least I could have saved shipping.

Oh well, I guess I didn't have to burn $4 a gallon gas going to get it :) Gotta look on the bright side...
Plus, Comp USA closed its location here. I think they are online only.
External hard drives are notorious for failing, Maxtors are particularly bad. I wouldn't trust anything I wanted to keep to Maxtor.
In my experience it has been Western Digitals that fail a lot. Of course the problem with external hard drives is the lack of a cooling fan so I always set mine to either power down after a few minutes of inactivity or, in the case of those that can be shut off, I go through the windows powerdown proceedure and turn them off when not in use. Knocking on wood right now. I have not had one fail yet.
Are you kidding me??? I've been using Maxtor for as long as I can remember and have yet to have any problems with them. As mentioned, the Western Digitals are the one that fail a lot. Just check any photo forums regarding back-up and storage.
Ask any IT professional that has to deal with backup and storage often and they won't touch a Maxtor.
I have 2 1tb each Apple time capsules. They are working great. Server grade drives with cooling fans. I also store all my originals remotely.
